Navy Special Warfare Foundation Fundraiser
June 5, 2005
|
On June 5, 2005, at 5:17 A.M. Navy Master Chief Phil Powell and Lieutenant Junior Grade Joe Knipp departed from Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek and began swimming the 15-mile span across the Chesapeake Bay, just off the protected shoreline of Fisherman's Island, as a fundraiser for the Navy Special Warfare Foundation. Two boats manned and owned by Alligator Marine business partners Walt Wilsey and Dennis Richardson, and crewman Troy Caver and LTJG Tim Cestaro accompanied the swimmers, providing hydration, nutrients, and interference with small water craft.
Eleven hours later and due to bad currents, they had been swimming for 17 miles, and were several miles off course. However, their successful attempt not only earned them a place in the NSW record books. It brought in over $14,000.00 for the Navy Special Warfare Foundation which helps the dependents and children of fallen special warfare combatants. |
